Stumpwork Raised Work

A variety of cultures have produced three dimensional or raised textiles.  Especially noteworthy are medieval and renaissance armorial or heraldic textiles.  The term stumpwork applies to English embroideries of the 17th century where pictures and picture caskets were produced, which combined embroidery with raised sculptural textile figures of birds and animals forming the main feature of the design.
