Hunting Equestrian
Man’s fascination with the horse and equestrian arts found frequent expression in tapestry design, most famously perhaps with the 16th century set known as The Hunts of the Emperor Maximilian (1531 – 1533), a series of twelve Renaissance tapestries now conserved in the Louvre. Other famous series include Francis Cleyn’s The Great Horses woven at Mortlake in the 17th century and Jean-Baptiste Oudry’s The Hunts of Louis XV. Bull, boar, bear, stag, and ostrich hunts were also popular and frequently depicted equestrian figures.
