Rugs
Typically the term ‘rug’ is used when a piece is 9 feet long or less and ‘carpet’ is used when over 9 feet – a rug is simply a small carpet. Rugs can display multiple symmetries or be directional. Directional rugs are often known as ‘Prayer rugs’ but were not necessarily woven for devotional reasons and can be used in a secular setting. Similarly, the majority of inscriptions found on rugs and carpets are of poetry and tend to refer to gardens and flowers, to love and to nature and have no religious significance.
