Pontremoli
Embroideries by Jacques Mereno Pontremoli (1886 – 1952) were produced in a small studio in Paddington in West London during the 1930's and continued until the 1950's. Every aspect of his work was hand produced and each embroidery is unique. Jacques Pontremoli famously experimented with different embroidery stitches and mixing of wools. Many of the designs of Pontremoli’s carpets owe their inspiration to the long and rich tradition of European carpets and textiles. New designs were commissioned from the artist and designer Haines, at the Royal College of Art, and were first prepared in watercolour. Pontremoli and his team of specialists gained a famous reputation and the most important patronage of the time - Queen Mary awarded him the Royal Warrant. His work is widely celebrated - surviving rugs and carpets in good condition are highly prized. Pontremoli's finest embroidered carpet, with a design of tiny scattered flowers, is in the State Room of the Italian Embassy in Grosvenor Square, London.
