Axminster Fulham Wilton
Established in 1755 in Devon, England, by Thomas Whitty the Axminster manufactory quickly overtook its competitors and became pre-eminent, producing significant numbers of outstanding state room carpets in late rococo and neoclassical designs. Axminster also continued the earlier tradition of adapting Persian, Indian and Ottoman models. Many of the greatest carpets still grace the rooms for which they were originally designed. In the 19th century the workshops merged with Wilton, which continued to produce original and significant designs well into the 1930’s.
