Textile Pictures Religious

Certainly from the fifteenth century embroidered pictures were produced.  Many were embroidered with a vast range of stitches in order to reproduce painterly effects in needlework on canvas. Some were designed specifically by artists, others adapted from prints and engravings. Biblical imagery was popular and increasingly these works were produced by women in domestic settings rather than in professional workshops.
