The design of this large and important Spanish carpet, with its spaced, angular arabesques, was based on the 16th century Ottoman carpets which were imported into Western Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. The famous "Lotto" design, usually woven on a red ground, was enlarged and instead woven on a golden yellow ground, with the arabesques woven in blue. This example is perhaps the largest surviving Cuenca carpet; most Cuenca carpets are less than ten feet in length.
