Needlework

The European tradition of fine craftsmanship and skilled needlework lends itself well to the production of carpets. In countries such as England, France, Portugal and Italy intricate floral, geometric and pictorial floor coverings were designed using a range of stitches and materials. In Victorian England needlework carpets were stitched as individual panels, often by a group of women, each with their own idiosyncrasies. Later each panel was joined together like a patchwork quilt.
