France

France was a major producer of carpets.  The royal Savonnerie workshops were first established in 1628 in Paris when Pierre Dupont set up the Savonnerie workshops supervised by Henry IV.  Carpets from Savonnerie were produced under the direction of court appointed artists and woven almost exclusively for the royal palaces.  Workshops  were also established at Aubusson on the river Creuse and were granted the title of Royal Manufactory in 1665.  By 1743 Aubusson were manufacturing pile carpets in an attempt to rival those of Savonnerie and to meet demand from French nobles.  However the manufactory became more noted for its output of tapestry and tapestry woven carpets and continued uninterrupted until 1870.  France also has a long history of hand embroidered needlework carpets, of both professional and domestic origin.  Works in current inventory date from the 17th to 19th centuries.
