20th Century

Carpets from the 20th century can be close copies of the styles and traditions of previous weaving traditions, stylistically reinterpretations of earlier designs or radical representations of twentieth century design movements such as the Art Deco or Modernist groups. They can range from the compromised pastiche to the sublime work of art with vast shifts in quality and technique depending where and when they were woven. The invention of chemical dyes in the 19th century and the 20th century movement to reintroduce natural dyes and traditional weaving methods has led to vast improvements in visual appeal. However, there was no magical line drawn in December 1899 between the great carpets of the 19th century and the supposedly lesser carpets of the 20th century and each carpet, whether vintage or semi-antique, must be judged on its own individual merit.
